- LAS CRUCES, N.M. - David Hansen, 77, died Sunday, September 5, 2010, at home after a battle with cancer. He was born June 30, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., son of Erling and Margaret (nee: Reetz) Hansen. Dave graduated from Barrington Consolidated High School, Barrington, Ill., and received a Bachelor of Science from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. Dave also completed training in the United States Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps and was awarded a commission as an Officer in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Pilot. Following his military duty, Dave worked for Howard Industries in Racine, where he rose to serve as Vice-President of Sales and Marketing. He later ventured out on his own, purchasing a small gear motor manufacturing business, which he named WSM Incorporated. He was President of WSM Incorporated for many years before selling the business, enjoying an early retirement and moving to New Mexico. Dave relished time with friends, was an avid tennis player, and enjoyed the occasional game of golf. He recently carded his first-ever hole-in-one at the Picacho Hills Country Club. He was a loyal fan of NMSU athletics and was an active supporter of the Aggie Volleyball Program. Dave was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and in recent years, began nearly every season with a trip to Mesa, Ariz. with family and friends for several Spring training games. Family always came first for Dave. He was a devoted husband, a father of five children, and a grandfather to 12 grandchildren to whom he was affectionately known as 'Grumpy' – a nickname that belied his cheerful ways, his sense of humor, and his zest for life. He leaves his loving wife of 33 years, Marilyn (nee: Henderson) Hansen; his daughters, Cathy (Scott) Farrell, Debbie Bradley, Becky (Tim) Griggs, and Nancy (Scott) Hancock; his son, Peter (Kelli) Hansen; and his grandchildren, Brian and Kevin Farrell, Ryan and Andrew Quella, Jake Bradley, Blake, Connor, and Max Griggs, Haley and Ellie Hansen, and Tasman and Jackson Hancock. Dave is also survived by his sisters, Dorothy Mitana and Karen (Larry) Lewis; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends. Dave was preceded in death by his parents; and by his first wife, Margaret 'Peggy' (nee: Reyer) Hansen. A gathering will be held at the family home this Sunday, September 12, 2010, at 5 p.m. in the evening for close friends and family to share in a Celebration of Dave's Life. In lieu of flowers, it is Dave's wish that donations be made in his name to the NMSU Aggie Volleyball Team or Mesilla Valley Hospice. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of Dave's close friends, who came to visit with him in his last weeks; their kindness and dedication to his well-being were deeply appreciated.
