- FRANKLIN, Idaho – With the loving support of her husband and children, LeOra Austin Bloxham returned home to the arms of her Heavenly Father on Aug. 24, 2010. LeOra was born in Cleveland, Idaho, on Dec. 10, 1927, to Orvil Butler and Catherine Nielson Austin. She was the oldest daughter of six children. At the age of 3 her family moved to Downey, Idaho, where she lived until moving to Franklin, Idaho, in 1977. She married her sweetheart, Merl H. Bloxham on July 18, 1945. They were later sealed on May 4, 1964, in the Logan LDS Temple. They just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with their family and friends.LeOra was active in the community throughout her lifetime with involvement in bowling leagues, the Red Cross, the Federated Women's Club of America, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Historical Society and the Idaho Library Association, and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary Pink Ladies. With both these classes as well as many others, she earned the equivalent of several college credits. LeOra spent many hours of service in both the old and new libraries in Downey. She felt that one of her greatest achievements was the cataloging and organizing of the Downey library system. This process took several years. She loved to travel, although her health limited some of these activities in the last few years of her life. She was still a very active lady! Between her and Merl they made and tied 27 quilts this spring.LeOra and Merl raised six children, each of whom she loved and was very proud of. LeOra is survived by her husband, Merl H. - Max D. North 1923 ~ 2010 HEBER CITY- Max D. North, our father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed from his earthly existence to his eternal home on September 5, 2010.He was born on April 25, 1923 in Charleston, UT to Perry D. and Lula Wright North. He spent his childhood in Charleston making life-long friends, attending school there and growing up to be the handsome man he always was. He graduated from Wasatch High School. As a young man he was drafted into the military to serve his country. He served valiantly in this war effort in the 695 Armored Field Artillery. He participated in the Normandy Invasion on Omaha Beach, the breakthrough of Saint Lo, the Argonne Forest, Bastogne, the Liberation of France, the European Theater, and the Battle of the Bulge. He married Betty Ann Duke when he returned from the military. Their marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple in 1960. Dad worked for the Utah State Fish and Game. He worked at the Midway Hatchery and then the Whiterocks Hatchery for five years as Superintendent. He spent the remainder of his career at the Midway hatchery as Superintendent. He loved the work, gave it his best effort, and was very successful at raising millions of fish to be planted in the lakes and streams of Utah for 45 years. Memories of his great sense of humor will remain with us because of the many stories we hold in our hearts that he gave us. Growing up during the depression era, he was a self-made man, accomplishing many things that he did on his own. He was always willing and helped his children in any way that he could. A Huge part of our love for our father was in the way he stepped up to the call of assisting our mother for five years after she suffered a stroke. He was there for her every need and made it possible that she could remain in her own home until she passed away. Max is survived by one daughter, Jeanne (Ralph) Sorensen, three sons, Lee (Melanie), Phil (Carla) and Kirk (Melodie), 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, a brother Barton, and a sister Betty Lue Orgill. - Jack Van Johnson 1941 ~ 2010 The Preston High Class of '60 announces that our dear friend and student body president, Jack Van Johnson, passed away 4 September 2010.He was born 9 September 1941 in Preston, Idaho to George L. and Ora Ann Roholt Johnson and grew up at Stock Valley Ranch in Treasureton, Idaho, the youngest of five children. He graduated from Preston High School as the valedictorian and received bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees in mathematics from Idaho State University and the University of Illinois. In 1964, he began teaching at the Church College of Hawaii, where he met his eternal companion, Casandra Hom. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple 31 May 1968. He retired from BYU-Hawaii after 38 years of service as a professor, division chair, and Associate Academic Vice President. His influence was widely felt through his classes, his "Know Your Religion" lectures, his service as a bishop, and the programs he coordinated throughout the Pacific Islands. Although Jack was born with muscular dystrophy which left him permanently thin and frail, he never allowed his physical limitations to prevent him from pursuing excellence in the things he could do. In high school and college he was a champion table tennis player. As an adult he excelled in croquet. Jack was blessed with a brilliant and active mind which he developed to become an outstanding scholar. It can truly be said: he was never lonely even when he was alone, and never idle even when he had nothing to do. Jack's personality and character contributed greatly to the bonds of love we still feel for each other 50 years later. He was our "best friend;" and remarkably, each of us believed we were his "best friend." He was constantly optimistic and positive and everyone relished his attention. He was a spiritual giant and everyone knew about his belief in God and commitment to his church. Because of his example we were more kind to each other and more tolerant of differences. He challenged us to think better and to try harder. His commitment to excellence made him a fierce competitor in the classroom; and although he competed to win, he celebrated other's successes and was gracious both when he won and when he did not. More importantly, he tutored, inspired and gave us confidence to believe in ourselves. His example of perseverance, commitment, and determination, and his willingness to generously share his keen intellect and warm friendship, is a precious gift we remember and treasure. We honor him for his ready laugh, generous spirit and the thoughtful, quiet commitment with which he lived his remarkable and distinguished, but unpretentious life. We count it as an honor and privilege to have known him and be counted among his many friends. Throughout his life he was dedicated to his family, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and service to others. He compiled a record of his spiritual experiences for his grandchildren in a book called Jack's Gift that will be a lasting legacy. He is survived by his wife, Cassandra, seven children, and 24 and one half grandchildren. Jack's influence as a father is reflected in the noble character and academic accomplishments of his children and grand-children. Funeral services will be held 7 September at 11:00 a.m. at the Preston North Stake Center, 310 North State Street, Preston, Idaho, and 18 September in Laie, Hawaii. Jack will be buried in the Laie, Hawaii cemetery. We miss him greatly and can't wait to see him in an immortal body.
