During World War II, Joyce worked on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge. She was an avid gardener, and loved helping people. - Alex Emmanuel Andersen Jr. Alex Emmanuel Andersen Jr., 93, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at National Health Care in Bristol with his children at his bedside. He was born in Roanoke, Va., on July 27, 1917, son of Edith and Alex E. Andersen Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann C. Andersen; and brother, John W. Andersen. He was a long time resident of Bristol. He retired as a senior master agent of Equitable Life Assurance Company. He was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School, Belmont Junior College, the University of Richmond, and the Midshipmen's School at Northwestern University. He distinguished himself as a World War II veteran. He was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. His ship, the SS John Randolph, was sunk north of Iceland while returning from a supply mission to Murmansk, Russia. He was redeployed to the Pacific Theater and served on the destroyer escort USS Whitman until the end of World War II. He served as executive officer until the ship was decommissioned. He achieved the rank of lieutenant commander. He and his wife, Mary Ann, enjoyed traveling and attending many sporting and entertainment events. He was an avid and outstanding golfer. He served on the Bristol Virginia City council and was the mayor of Bristol. Survivors include three children, Mary Clayton Andersen and Bob Walker of Abingdon, Va., Cris Andersen and Ann Boyd of Culpeper, Va.. and Alex III and Cathy Andersen of Bristol; grandchildren, Clay Walker of Asheville, Jessica Walker and Colin Whitlow of New York City. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:15, Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at St. Anne Catholic Church. The funeral mass will follow at 11:30, with Rev. Timothy E. Keeney officiating. The committal service and interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Military rites will be presented by the Bristol VFW Honor Guard. - Albert Clyde Barrett BRISTOL, Tenn. Albert Clyde Barrett, age 72, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010. Clyde was a native of Gastonia, N.C., and lived there until his graduation from high school, when he joined the U.S. Air Force. Upon returning home, he met and married Loretta Stephens and the two moved to Maryland where Clyde worked for the National Security Agency for 36 years. The two retired to Bristol Tennessee where he loved to trout fish, work in his yard, jog and run in races, and generally anything that allowed him to be outdoors. Clyde and Loretta were married for 47 years and had two daughters, Karen Rose Hafer and Kimberly Ann Pittman. He was a wonderful father. He loved his three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Hafer, Hannah Rose Hafer, and Cameron Lee White. Clyde was preceded in death by his mother and father, Daniel Edgar Barrett and Rosella Petty Barrett. He is survived by his loving wife, Loretta; his two daughters; his grandchildren; his sister, Ruth Lingerfelt Clary; and his brother, James Edward Barrett. - BETSY JANE GRUBBS HALFACRE 78, of Collierville died Sunday, September 5, 2010 at Baptist Hospital after a brief illness. Betsy was born August 17, 1932 in Jackson, Tennessee. She spent her youth in Jackson where she met and married her husband of 56 years Robert Halfacre who preceded her in death. She attended Jackson High School and Union University and was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She has been a resident of the Memphis area for 55 years. In those years she enjoyed duplicate bridge, travel, reading, shopping, and fishing. However, her greatest pleasure came from spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a long time member of The Variety Club of Memphis. Betsy was also preceded in death by her parents Esther and Hasil Grubbs, her sister Marian Rushing, her brother James Grubbs, and her grandson Drew Lawrence. She leaves her daughter Betsy Friedl (Bob) and two sons Robert Halfacre, Jr. (Julie) and Jeffery Halfacre (Tamah). She was a beloved grandmother to Clark Lawrence, Adam and Josh Friedl, and Laine, James, Harper, Holly and Mary Lennox Halfacre. - Eddie Murphy, 53, 167 Log Cabin Road, Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2010, at Johnson City Medical Centere. He was the son of the late Earl Murphy Jr. and Goldie Mae Arnette Murphy and was born in Washington, D.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Houston Murphy, and two brothers, Gary Murphy and Rex Murphy. Mr. Murphy was a former employee of Snap-on Tools of Elizabethton. He enjoyed landscaping, yard work and hunting. He liked to watch NASCAR and wrestling on television and loved to collect junk.
- Mr. Billy "Bill" Anderson, 52, 419 Rambling Road, Jonesborough, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, in the Johnson City Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Johnson County, he was the son of Arvis Anderson, Mountain City, and Frankie Clawson Flannery, Poga. He was a retired employee of the Exide Corporation. - Norma Juanita Wiseman Smith, 93, of Elizabethton, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, in the Hermitage Health Care Center. She was the daughter of the late Ben and Edna Wiseman and was born in Spruce Pine, N.C. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Sidney Smith, in 1967; a sister, Kathleen Burleson, and two brothers, Ben Wiseman and Harry Wiseman. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a member of Elk Valley Baptist Church. She was a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens Center, the Dancing Grandmas, and performed in the Wataugans Historical Drama at Sycamore Shoals. She was a member of the Republican National Committee of Washington, D.C.

- Reba Jean Henard Repass, 58, of 380 Old Mountain View Road, Lot #7, Bluff City, passed away Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at her residence following a lengthy battle with cancer.She was born in Sullivan County, to the late Roy Henard and Gladys Skeens Henard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Jack Repass, six brothers and one sister. She attended New Life Ministries. Our mother was the strongest woman we knew. She was always there for us, and she fought to live for her daughters and grandchildren. They meant the world to her.

- Betty J. Gouge, 73, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at her residence following an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Clyde B. and Viola Putman Hughes and was born in the Hughes Herrell Township of Mitchell County, N.C. She lived most of her life in Elizabethton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a step-grandson, Christopher Smith. Mrs. Gouge was a homemaker who faithfully served her husband while he served his country for over 20 years in the United States Navy. She was a member of East Side Free Will Baptist Church and a former member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church. She loved needlework and Swedish weaving.
- June Dale Greene Largent passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, in the Pine Ridge Care Center. A native of Wise County, Va., she was a daughter of the late George D. and Dona Linkes Greene. She had lived most of her life in Carter County. She was a member of the Valley Forge Christian Church and also attended Sinking Creek Baptist Church, where she volunteered her services on numerous occasions. Mrs. Largent was a faithful Christian and mother and loved the Lord with all her heart. She enjoyed going to church and was a shining example to her community and church family. She will be greatly missed by her family, church family, friends and everyone who knew her sweet spirit. We will forever cherish all the special memories. Mrs. Largent was retired from Kings Department Store and Dossers. She enjoyed being with her fellow workers and friends. Mrs. Largent enjoyed working in her flowers, decorating for the seasons and was also an excellent housekeeper and cook.

- BAGLEY, WARREN P., MD - age 59 of Maryville passed away Saturday, September 4, 2010. He was born April 11, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles and Nancy Poore Bagley who preceded him in death. He graduated from The Westminister Schools, Atlanta, Georgia in 1969. He received his B.A. from Rice University in 1973, and graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with an M.D. in 1979. He completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1987 and he was board certified in Anesthesiology and Medical Acupuncture. He was an assistant professor of Anesthesia at UTMCK; belonged to the American Society of Anesthesiologists, International Anesthesia Research Society, American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, and was a Life Endowment member of NRA. Warren was a U.S. Army veteran who proudly served as a physician from 1977-1989. During that time he was a flight surgeon and later completed specialty training as an anesthesiologist. As his final active duty assignment, Lieutenant Colonel Bagley was the Chief of Anesthesia and Operative Services at Fort Meade, Maryland. While serving he completed several military courses, including the U.S. Army Ranger school. He earned numerous military awards and decorations for his service. Warren was one of the original organizers and a charter member of the American Gaited Mule Association, where he served as secretary treasurer for seventeen years. He enjoyed raising and showing gaited mules, especially Georgia Peach, who won many ribbons. In addition to rescuing many animals himself, Warren contributed to several animal welfare organizations and was happy when Blount County was able open its own animal shelter. He is survived by his wife of 20 years; Elizabeth Gilmore; sons, Steven of Seoul, South Korea, and Christopher and wife Atoosa of Germantown, Maryland; granddaughter, Alyssa; brother, Samuel and wife, Regina; brother-in-law, Brigadier General R.W. and wife Trish Thomas; sisters, Faye and husband Jurek Marty, Nancy and husband Don Richards. Warren leaves behind many rescued dogs, especially Rita rescued from Hurricane Rita. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Reginald Gilmore. A celebration of his life will be held at 6:00 pm Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at the Smithview Pavilion and Event Center with Rev. George Doebler officiating. She was very involved in working with her husband in his General Contracting business and supporting him in his Loudon County political endeavors. Helen and Jim were avid Tennessee football fans and followed the Vols at home and on the road for years. Helen was very proud of the heritage of her family and encouraged her children to appreciate their genealogy and the honor of being a part of one of the First Families of Tennessee. Helen supported her children and grandchildren with great love and devotion. - BRODY, ZELMORE HABER "STEVE" - age 85, of Knoxville, died peacefully on September 4, 2010 at his home surrounded by his adoring family. Steve, as he was known to his closest friends, was born in Knoxville on August 4, 1925 where he lived most of his life. Steve graduated from Tennessee Military Institute in 1943. While attending military school he excelled as a Golden Gloves boxer. Steve was a WWII veteran and served in the Infantry with the 86th Division in Europe and the South Pacific. After completing his tour in the US Army, Mr. Brody received his BS and MA from University of Tennessee and completed extensive graduate work in Special Education and Rehabilitation. He was a certified school psychologist, licensed psychological examiner and licensed clinical specialist. Mr. Brody was most revered for his work in establishing special education programs throughout more than three decades as the Director of Psychological Services and Special Education for the Anderson County School System and as Director of the Daniel Arthur Rehabilitation Center in Oak Ridge. His program at the Daniel Arthur Center served as the model for such programs throughout the state. Mr. Brody retired early after the tragic death of his son, Samuel Mark in 1990. He continued to serve children and adults on a part-time consulting basis until the time of his death. While attending UT, he was a charter member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity. He was a member of the Oak Ridge Rotary Club where he was named as a Paul Harris Fellow; helped establish the Knox Area Epilepsy Foundation; Chairman of the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program; former board member for the Arnstein Jewish Community Center; consultant to the National Endowment for the Arts; served as an adjunct Instructor in Special Education at UT; and was a member of Temple Beth El. Mr. Brody enjoyed many of the athletic programs at UT, especially football, which he watched from the same seats for nearly 50 years as a proud season ticket holder at Neyland Stadium. He traveled the world with his beloved wife of 59 years, Jamie (Talantis), and he always found happiness right here at home on his pontoon boat on Ft. Loudon Lake. Mr. Brody was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Lillian Brody; and his beloved son, Samuel Mark Brody. Steve is survived by his loving wife Jamie; his daughter Pamela Brody Branton; son-in-law Peter Branton and their children Jonathan, David and Blue (Linden Dean); sons Steven V. Brody, Michael D. Brody and daughter-in-law Jennifer and their children Jackson, Samantha and Chase; cousin Shirley Jaeger; special friends Ollie Sudderth, Larry Kincaid, Kitty Peck and James Farmer; and special puppy, Lily. The family extends special thanks to Karen Anderson, Dr. Calvin Bard, Dr. James Cox and Dr. James A. Killefer. Active pallbearers include: his sons Michael and Steven; grandsons Jonathan, David and Jackson; son-in-law Peter; nephews Scott Mandl and Jimmy Chido; and special friend Bruce Zucker. - PAYNE, Margaret Delzell, age 85, of Palatka, FL, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 at Putnam Community Medical Center, following an extended illness. She was a native of Nashville, TN and had lived in Palatka, FL since 1948, coming from Winchester, TN. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Palatka, FL and was a homemaker. Mrs. Payne had worked for many years as a School Crossing Guard and was a former member of the Palatka Woman’s Club. The love of her life was her husband, children and grandchildren. She loved watching all sports, but enjoyed baseball, especially when her grandchildren were playing. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Peewee Owens, a brother, Dwight Delzell and two sisters, Juanita Warren and Faye Gordinier. Mrs. Payne is survived by her husband of 66 years, William H. "Bill" Payne of Palatka, FL; two daughters, Cappie Owens of Orange City, FL and Cristie Lee and husband, Jody of Palatka, FL; two sons, Billy Payne and wife, Mary Kay and Bobby Payne and wife, Margie, all of Palatka, FL; two brothers, Jody Delzell and wife, Kathleen of Palatka, FL and Earl Delzell and wife, Nell of Nashville, TN; and five grandchildren, Josh Payne and wife, Ashlee, Chance Clay, Brandon Lee, Heather Payne and Lexie Lee, all of Palatka, FL; numerous nieces and nephews; and her caregivers, Mary Aldridge and Holly Richardson. Visitation was held on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010 from 6–8 p.m. at the Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka, FL. She was a very active member of the Gum Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Gum Creek Community. She was an artist, a horticulturist, a schoolteacher and a beautician, but most of all, she was loving to her family. Surviving is her husband, Elroy Finney; son, Dennis Finney of Decherd; daughter, Brenda (Mark) Fischer of Murfreesboro; sister, Verty Hill Gilmer of Hillsboro; grandchildren, Heather Panter, Drew (Ginger) Panter, Holly Finney and Lucas Finney; great-grandchild, Braylon Panter; and six nieces.
