- Craig Tyler Cookingham August 24, 1953 - August 23, 2010 Born in Fresno, California to Paul and Melva Cookingham, Craig grew up in the Clovis area with his three brothers Kent, Kevin, Curtis, Mom and Dad. Graduating from Clovis High School in 1971, he later earned his B.S. from Willamette University in 1976. Shortly thereafter he began his career in the lumber business in Fresno, but moved back to the great Northwest where he and Elaine had two children, Emily and Paul. He continued his lumber career with various companies, only to have his career interrupted by a brain tumor in 1993. After a long recovery, he eventually entered back into the work force. In 2008 he placed his career on hold to move back to Fresno to be near family and friends. Still residing in the Fresno area, Craig was eager to get back to Oregon. His passing followed a very short illness while visiting in Salem. He is survived by his two children, Emily and Paul Cookingham, both of Salem; his mother, Melva Cookingham; brothers, Curtis (Pamela), Kevin (Kelli), all of Fresno; his brother, Kent (Menta) of Cambria, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. His legacy remains as a man of God who endured great physical hardship to become a living example of the healing power of our Lord and Savior. Craig was a selfless man with an incredible love for people - influencing many lives around him. He will be greatly missed. A "Celebration of Life" service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 11, 2010, at Peoples Church of Salem. - George Joseph Filsinger April 27, 1923 - August 30, 2010 PORTLAND - George J. Filsinger was born April 27, 1923, in O'Neill, Nebraska to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Filsinger. His family moved to Oregon when he was a young man where he attended Sellwood Grade School and graduated from Benson High School. Since living by the Oaks Park Skating Rink, George spent many an afternoon there and met his wife to be, Helen DeVeny. They both loved to skate and made many lifetime friends there. George was an enlistee in the U.S. Army from 1943 - 1946 and was a paratrooper in the 101 Airborne "to make the country safe for all the younger generation" he told everyone. When George returned from the service he and Helen were married on June 22, 1946. In 1978, George retired at age 55 from Pacific NW Bell after 32 years with many memorable stories. He was an avid Ham radio enthusiast and delighted in attending the Ham fairs. He and Helen enjoyed their time together with family and friends. George loved to tinker and repair anything from the house to cars. If there as any doubt on a repair, George would find a way. One phone call was all it took to ask George for help and he would be there wearing his blue and white overalls with his tool box in hand. George was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Through all of life challenges George persevered, maintaining his keen sense of humor while whistling a song wherever he went. He was much loved and will be greatly missed. George is survived by his three children, Eileen Long, Marty Filsinger and Brad Filsinger; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
