- -- Mr. Crawford, 77, of Concord, died Aug. 27, 2010 after a long five-year battle with cancer at his residence. He was born on Feb. 8, 1933 in Boone, N.C., to the late, C.W. "Joe" Crawford and Bess Scoggins Crawford. He attended Watauga County schools and graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1955 with a B.S. degree in math and physical education. After graduating from Appalachian, he taught and coached girls' basketball for one year at Prospect High School in Monroe before being drafted into the Army, where he served in the Signal Corps at Fort Gordon, Ga., from 1956-1958.In 1958, he met Mary Robinson in Boone and they were married in 1959. They lived in Fort Pierce, Fla., for five years where Mr. Crawford taught math and coached at Dan McCarty High School.In 1963, Mr. Crawford and his family returned to Charlotte when he accepted a job at Harding High School. He taught math and coached various sports. In 1967, he became the head baseball coach, a position he held until 1984. During that time his teams never had a losing season. He also had several players who went on to play college ball and the pros. His teams played in the state playoffs several times and in 1975 was the state runner-up. Mr. Crawford particularly enjoyed the huge rivalry with West Mecklenburg during the years his sons played under coach Carl Bolick and coach Clyde Peek. Although they fought hard to win, they remained the closest of friends off the field and played golf together.He loved playing golf and made some very special friends through his years of playing. Especially his Monday golfing buddies he met after his retirement. Mr. Crawford also enjoyed working at Lowes Motor Speedway at race time twice a year. He and his wife enjoyed going on trips with Christian Tours. Together they also volunteered with Friendship Trays. They also sang in the Chancel Choir and enjoyed many other activities at their church.In January 2005, Bill and his wife Mary became residents of the"Gardens of Taylor Glen" in Concord and quickly became involved with their"new" family.In addition to his wife of 50 one years, Mary, he is survived by his sons William (Bill Jr.) and his wife, Suzy, of Concord and Bryan of Stanley. Mr. Crawford was also the proud Paw-paw to his granddaughters, Ryn and Neely Crawford of Concord. His funeral servicewas at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at First United Methodist Church, 140 North Main Street, Mt. Holly, N.C. 28120. Interment followed in Forest Lawn West Cemetery, Charlotte. - -- Warren Marcus Ward, 71, of Blowing Rock, died Friday evening, Aug. 27, 2010, at the Davant Rehab and Extended Care Facility. Warren Marcus was born March 5, 1931 in Watauga County to Marcus Arnold and Lula Grace Harmon Ward. He was a farm worker. Mr. Ward is survived by his sister, Martha Presnell and husband, Roy, of Sugar Grove; one brother, Jimmy Ward of Boone; and a number of cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus Arnold and Lula Grace Harmon Ward; one sister, Lillie Mae Ward; and one brother, Wayne Paul Ward. Services are incomplete. - -- Philip Wesley Spann Sr., 75, of Baird's Creek Road, Vilas, N.C., died Friday morning, Aug. 27, 2010, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Philip Wesley Spann was born March 30, 1935 in Watauga County to Charlie Robert and Lola Greene Spann. He was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church and attended Foscoe Christian Church. Mr. Spann retired from Suburban Propane. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was an avid fisherman. Mr. Spann is survived by his wife, Dema Aldridge Spann; one son, Phillip W. "J.R." Spann Jr. and wife, Kim, and one grandson, Grayson Spann, all of Lenoir; two brothers, Lawrence Greene and wife, Elsie, of Warner Robbins, Ga., and Clarence Spann and wife, Barbara, of Lenoir; one sister, Virginia Greene and husband, John "Bud," of Lenoir; two stepdaughters, Pam Smith and husband, Harvey, of Foscoe, and Lori Whitmire and husband, Scott, of Greenville, S.C.; and four step grandchildren, Josh Church and wife, Joni, of Winston-Salem, Aaron Smith of Foscoe, Ashlyn Bristle of Asheville and Ryan Bristle of Waynesville. - John Dallas Jolly, 95, of Roscoe Jolly Road, Taylorsville, passed away suddently Friday, August 27, 2010, at his home. He was born May 8, 1915, in Alexander County, son of the late Sippy Jolly and Florence Price Jolly. Mr. Jolly was a retired furniture worker and was a member of Friendship Lutheran Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Roscoe Jolly, Mack Jolly, George Jolly, and Ransom Jolly, and four sisters, Alli Icenhour, Grace Deal, Nola Jolly, and Lillian Jolly. He is survived by a son, Russell Jolly and wife Bertha Mae of Cartersville, Georgia; two daughters, Malinda Fox and husband Leon and Marcella Laws and husband Roby, all of Taylorsville; a sister, Lela Jolly of Taylorsville; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. - Hazel Elizabeth Hoke Preslar, 94, passed away August 29, 2010, at Abernathy Laurels, after a period of declining health. Hazel was born November 23, 1915, in Catawba County, daughter of the late William A. and Mary Little Hoke. She was a member of Fellowship Advent Christian Church and a very devoted wife, and especially supportive of her husband's ministery. She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and also helped with Girl Scouts. People in Bethlehem remember her as a substitute teacher at Bethlehem Elementary School. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Garland Preslar. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mitzi Roberts and husband Bradley of Texas; a son, Gary Preslar of Bethlehem; grandsons, Gary Preslar of Florida, and Danny Preslar of California; sister-in-law, Mrs. Lee Moore of Hickory; and nieces and nephews. - Aubrey Dion Stikeleather, 39, of Hwy 90 E., Stony Point, passed away Monday, September 6, 2010, at his home, unexpectedly. He was born September 16, 1970, in Iredell County, son of Danny R. - Phyllis Goff High, 58, of Sorrento, Florida, passed away Monday, August 23, 2010, at her home. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, daughter of the late Leslie Goff and Ruth Hines Goff of Louisville, Kentucky. She grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to Sorrento, Florida, in 2004 from Short Gap, West Virginia. She was a Ministry Counselor, on the Board of Safe Harbor Ministries, licensed and ordained, and a member of Family Bible Church, Eustis, Florida. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Greg High of Sorrento, Florida; a son, Bob Wooldridge of Mount Dora, Florida; three daughters, Angela Priest of Umatilla, Florida, Samantha High of Eustis, Florida, and Tabitha High of Pompano Beach, Florida; two brothers, Leslie E. - Geraldine Hess Smith, 71, of NC Hwy 16 North, Conover, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 6, 2010, at her residence surrounded by those she held most dear. She was born December 4, 1938, in Buchannon County, Virginia, daughter of the late John Wesley Hess and Mary Moore Hess. She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Luther Smith; two daughters, Anna Ruth Smith and Leisa Jean Smith; four sisters; three brothers; and two grandsons, David Allen Taft and Travis Lester. - Mason Herman Bennett, 90, of Harrisburg, formerly of Taylorsville, died Friday, August 27, 2010, at Liberty Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Charlotte. He was born in Alexander County October 20, 1919, son of the late Will and Anna McClain Bennett. He was a retired engineer, having worked most of his life in New York. He and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and five sisters. - Sharon Kay Crisp Lowry, 47, of Statesville, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at Gordon Hospice House after an extended illness. She was born December 15, 1962, in Andrews Hospital, and resided in Graham County until college. Sharon graduated from Stecoah High School in 1981 and Mars Hill College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science. She was working on obtaining her Masters Degree in counseling at Liberty University at the time of her illness. She has been a homemaker for the last fourteen years. She was also a home school educator for the last seven years. Prior to that, Sharon was a counselor for the North Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. Sharon was an active member and served her Lord at Western Avenue Baptist Church. Sharon was a Proverbs 31 woman. She was preceded in death by her mother, JoAnn Shope Crisp. In addition to her father, Delbert Crisp and wife Mary Jo, she is survived by her husband of twenty-six years, Paul Lowry; a son, James Patton Lowry; a daughter, Mary Beth Lowry; and a sister, Carol Ponds and husband Harvey, all of Statesville. - Terry Wayne Parsley
- Garry Allen Dennison, 61, of Fletcher Rd., Union Grove, passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at Iredell Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness. He was born March 2, 1949, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Glenn Dennison and Lillian Vest Dennison. Mr. Dennison served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, worked as a security guard, and was also of the Catholic faith. - John Henry Retherford, 68, of N. Thomas Lane, Stony Point, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2010, at his home, after an extended illness. - Avery Paige "Slab" Jenkins, 72, of Taylorsville, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010, at his home. He was born in Taylorsville to parents Avery Jay and Irene Fincannon Jenkins on February 1, 1938. He was a member of White Plains Baptist Church, where he served as a bell-ringer and door-greeter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanean Jenkins Cline and husband Escar, and his father and mother-in-laws, R.D. & Lundia Kerley. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alta Mae Kerley Jenkins of the home; their children, Debbie Adams and husband Jerry of Wilkes County, Patty Carrigan and husband Jeffery, Vickie McAlpin and husband David, and Tracy Jenkins, all of Taylorsville; a brother, Larion W. She was born August 1, 1916, in Wilkes County, daughter of William “Bill” and Ellen Green Church. - Robert Andrew "Andy" Pruitt, 38, of Vashti Fire Dept. Rd., Taylorsville, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010, at Wake Forest Baptist University Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born April 14, 1972, in Guilford County, son of Jim Pruitt and Kay Clinard Pruitt of Union Grove. Mr. Pruitt worked for the Union Grove Saw & Knife, Inc. He loved the outdoors, raccoon hunting, and being a competition shooter in the Thousand Yard Bench Rest. He lived for and loved the Lord and was also of the Baptist faith. - Emma Campbell Bunton Wilson, 93, of Avante Nursing Home in Concord, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. The daughter of the late Ira and Nancy Shoemaker Campbell, she was born in Alexander County April 6, 1917. Emma was educated in the Alexander County Schools and was retired from Linn Mills and China Grove Cotton Mills. She was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Vernon Byrd, Sr. a infant daughter, Beverly Kaye Byrd and daughter in law Valerie Byrd; brothers, Garth Winston Craig and Paul Samuel Craig; by sisters, Grace Edna Craig Lee, Claire Bell Craig Lovelace, and Willie Ruth Craig Black. She was retired from Cleveland County Department of Social Services. She also was a member of First Baptist Church since 1938 where she taught Sunday school for over 50 years.
