- Arthur W. Burgess Arthur W. Burgess, of Colonia and Mantoloking, passed away recently, at the age of 73. Arthur was so many wonderful things. A tireless advocate for his clients and friends, a loving father, an adventurer on the high seas, a gourmand, a world traveler and the proudest grandfather you will ever find. Arthur loved life. He navigated through both the smooth and rough seas of life with confidence and a steady, learned hand, always the responsible captain. Those on board, his family, and those he shared the waters with, his friends, could always count on Arthur’s intelligence, thoughtful counsel and of course, unconditional love. Born in Perth Amboy, Arthur attended St. Mary’s High School, Seton Hall University and New York Law School. After completing an exhilarating clerkship, Arthur became an associate, and then a partner, with Toolan, Romond, Haney and Burgess in Perth Amboy. With an entrepeneurial spirit, Arthur formed his own law firm in 1969. Representing clients’ interests with the utmost thoughtfulness, dignity and ethics, his legal career was studded with many defining moments and triumphs. He was known in the community as a trusted advisor. While the law defined him professsionally, his true passion was his family and his love of the sea. Dolores and daughters Peggy and Susan were his constant focus. His grandchildren, Max, Hunter and Channing, of Napa, Calif., gave him so much joy. He spoke with his daughter Peggy every day to get an update on his grandchildrens’ latest successes and exploits. They made him so happy. An avid sailor, Arthur loved his boats. He sought adventure sailing at the Jersey Shore and all around the world. His most coveted memories included blue water racing from Massachusetts to Bermuda, and many other amazing excursions on the Atlantic Ocean with family and friends. A voracious reader, with an intellectual curioisity for just about everything, Arthur would constantly discover, research and seek out the next big thing. He embraced new technologies and loved his “toys,” particularly when they allowed him to communicate with or record his grandchildren. Yet Arthur was a traditionalist at heart, with an ear and eye for the classics. Arthur was truly tireless, a man who worked and played with gusto. The world will move that much slower with his passing, and he will be missed by all who knew him. Funeral arrangements were conducted privately.
