- Venita N. Messinger, 91The sister of a Bluffton resident, Venita N. Messinger, 91, passed away Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at her New England Club home of 14 years in Anderson Township, Hamilton County, Ohio. She began her life in Garrett on July 8, 1919. She graduated from Manchester College in 1939 and took additional course work at Missouri State Teachers College and Purdue University. She started her teaching career in a one room school in Decatur, and also taught in Bluffton and Frankfort, Oakland, Calif., Kirksville Mo., and Ottumwa, Iowa, before finishing 17 years at school #84 in Indianapolis. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and a life member of the National Education Association. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend.Surviving relatives include five sisters, Luana Stanley of Fort Wayne, Jean Holmes of Fort Wayne, Jennie Kralicek of Bryan, Ohio, Lorene Oswalt of Bluffton and Ines Gillespie of Wabash; one brother, Max Brewer of Taveres, Fla.; one daughter, Danielle Messinger Zicka of Cincinnati; one son, Robert E. As a PA-33 Medic treating a Marine on the beach at Iwo Jima, he saw the original American flag rise on Mount Suribachi. He wore the campaign ribbons of the Asiatic-Pacific with one Bronze Star and participated in the invasion of Okinawa with a Good Conduct Metal. He was honorable discharged on January 8, 1946.Arnold graduated from Lafayette Center High School on April 17, 1942. He was a graduate of Cornell University, Central Bible Collage, Indiana Purdue Extension, and a Minister of the Assembly of God Church.Arnold worked for Martin Construction, Gardner’s Commissary, and Scott Foam (Foamex) where he supervised chemical handling. He enjoyed serving on the board and teaching the Senior High Sunday School class at Nine Mile United Methodist Church. Frankie was born in Bluffton on Oct. 11, 1940, to Russell Payne and Helen (Brinneman) Miller. She graduated from Bluffton High School with the class of 1958. She went on to study at the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1961 as a Registered Nurse. Frankie worked at the Caylor – Nickel Clinic for 31 years in the departments of Obstetrics, Surgery and Staff Development. For the last 10 years she has worked for Aging & In-Home Services. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, The American Red Cross and AORN Association and a past president of Tri Kappa Sorority. She also served as a Girl Scout Leader and on the board of the Panos Free Clinic along with the Bluffton Park Board. On Sept. 3, 1961, she married Joe Emshwiller in Bluffton, and they shared the last 50 years together. She is survived by their children, Brenda (Don) Stafford of West Chester, Ohio, John J. (Donna) Emshwiller of Bluffton and Patricia (Isaac K.G.) Fokuo of Nairobi, Kenya; along with 8 grandchildren, Matthew, Douglas, Clayton and Coleman Stafford, Rachel and Lucas Emshwiller and Jayden and Simon Fokuo. She married Jesse Reeves in Illinois in December 2002; he preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 2010. A 1960 graduate of Chester Center High School, Mrs. Reeves worked at Franklin Electric for 20 years. She was active in quilting, sewing, painting and gardening. She enjoyed reading and interacting with her facebook. She was a 4-H leader for years, and a member of Unity Christian Church. Surviving relatives include two sons, Mike (Margaret) Miller of Markle and Mark Miller of Reifsburg; two daughters, Laura (Russell) Iidea of Bluffton and Diana (Ben) Stetzel of Roanoke; three step children, Jenny (Jim) Justus of Simpsonville S.C., Abby (Mark) Mortier of Fishers and Mike (Rita) Reeves of Greenwood; two sisters, Doris (Tino) Martinez of Lynnwood, Calif. and Mary Kizer of Bluffton; one brother, Richard (Kay) Williams of Fort Wayne; 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She is also survived by her first husband, Kerry Miller of Bluffton.
